How to request tree trimming near power lines

Last reviewed: August 13, 2026VerifiedLUMA

In short

When a tree’s branches reach the power lines, trimming is requested from LUMA. The company lists it among its residential services and publishes two routes: Mi LUMA Web or in person at a Customer Service Center. It publishes neither requirements nor a cost. What does matter is not solving it yourself: trimming branches touching an energised line is exactly the situation that causes electrocutions, which is why a crew exists to do it.

What is it?

It is a maintenance request about vegetation interfering with power lines. LUMA lists it alongside streetlight repair and generator registration, in the other-services block of its residential requests page. It is not a damage claim or a complaint: it is flagging a condition so that it is handled by whoever has the equipment and training to work near energised conductors.

Who can do it?

LUMA publishes no conditions for requesting trimming on this page: not being a customer, not owning the tree, not the tree being on your property. What defines the case is vegetation interfering with the lines. If what you have is an already-downed line or a tree on the line after a storm, that is not a trimming request but an emergency, and the route is the phone number 1-844-888-5862.

Step by step

  1. Step 1: Do not cut it yourself

It is the most important advice in this guide. A branch touching an energised conductor can carry current, and a ladder or an extension pruner completes the path to ground. A crew exists precisely because this work requires equipment and training. Reporting it and waiting is the right route even when it takes time.

  2. Step 2: Tell trimming apart from an emergency

Branches growing toward the line are a trimming request. A tree already down on the line, a line on the ground, sparks or a burning smell are something else: you call 1-844-888-5862. The difference is not perceived severity but response time, and putting an emergency into a form removes that response.

  3. Step 3: Note the location and, if you can, take photos from a distance

Address with number and a clear reference: opposite what, between which corners, on which side of the street. If you take photos, do it from the ground and at a distance; you do not need to get close for it to be visible that the branch has reached the line.

  4. Step 4: File through Mi LUMA Web or at a Customer Service Center

Those are the two published routes. Keep the reference number: LUMA publishes no timeframe for trimming on this page, so that number is what lets you follow up without opening a new case.

Where to do it

Through Mi LUMA Web or in person at any LUMA Customer Service Center. For line emergencies, LUMA’s phone number is 1-844-888-5862.

How long it takes

What to do if something goes wrong

If the tree is on your property, LUMA does not publish on this page that this changes the request: what defines the case is the interference with the lines. If a private contractor offers to trim near the line, bear in mind that working next to energised conductors is the reason a specialised crew exists. If what you want is to claim damage that already occurred from a fault or a fluctuation, that is a different LUMA procedure with its own guide. If the branch took down service to your house, that is an outage and goes by phone. PRFácil does not coordinate trimming or file requests with LUMA.

Common mistakes

  • Trimming branches touching an energised line yourself.
  • Putting an emergency — a tree down on the line, a line on the ground — into a form instead of calling.
  • Giving a vague location so the crew cannot find the tree.
  • Assuming that because the tree is on private property LUMA does not handle the interference.
  • Confusing trimming with a damage claim, which is for what already happened.
  • Filing again instead of following up with the reference number.

Frequently asked questions

Can I trim it myself?

Working near energised conductors is precisely what LUMA’s crew does with equipment and training. The published route is to request trimming through Mi LUMA Web or at a Customer Service Center.

Does it cost anything?

LUMA publishes no cost for the trimming request on its residential services page. It publishes no service timeframe either.

The tree is in my yard. Will they still handle it?

LUMA publishes no condition on this page about whose tree it is. The service is described as a trimming request within its residential services, and what is relevant is the interference with the lines.
