How to file your income tax return in Puerto Rico

Last reviewed: August 13, 2026VerifiedHacienda

In short

The Individual Income Tax Return is the annual form where you report your income and claim the deductions you are entitled to. For individuals determining income on a calendar-year basis, the deadline is April 15. Hacienda states that filing the 2025 individual return is done electronically, and it maintains separate sections for the 2025 return and for 2019 through 2024. If you will not make it in time, there is the automatic six-month extension; if the date has already passed, Hacienda publishes a specific section on what to do when you forget to file.

What is it?

Hacienda defines it this way: the Individual Income Tax Return is a form required annually of the taxpayer, on which they report their income and claim the deductions they are entitled to. Around it, the Department organizes a set of procedures worth understanding as parts of one system: the extension if you need more time, the amendment if you made a mistake, the refund if you overpaid, and — on the other side — the deficiency notice and the seizure if Hacienda determines you owe more than you reported.

Who can do it?

Who must file, how the return is completed and what the deadline is are things Hacienda documents in its Return Filing Instructions section rather than in a general summary. What is clearly published is the date for most people: individuals, estates and trusts determining income on a calendar-year basis go to April 15, or to the fifteenth day of the fourth month following year-end if they file on a fiscal-year basis. There are also filers with different dates — partnerships and grantor trusts on March 15, the non-resident foreign individual on June 15 — worth verifying if your case is not an ordinary wage earner’s.

Cost

The cost depends on your situation. Check which cost applies with the official agency.

Step by step

  1. Step 1: Confirm your deadline

For most individuals it is April 15. But if you file on a fiscal-year basis, the date is the fifteenth day of the fourth month following your year-end. And if your situation is a partnership, special partnership, corporation of individuals or grantor trust, Hacienda sets March 15 — a month earlier. Checking this first avoids the costliest mistake on the tax calendar.

  2. Step 2: Start with the Instructions Booklet and the Checklist

Hacienda publishes those two tools alongside the Tax Calculations and the new tax benefits section, on its Return Filing Information page. That is where who must file, how to complete it and the year’s changes live — which is exactly what a general guide cannot summarize, because it changes with each tax year.

  3. Step 3: Check whether a benefit you did not know about applies

Hacienda maintains specific sections many people overlook, among them the Credit Return for Persons 65 or Older and Compensatory Credit for Low-Income Pensioners, which it calls the “Planilla Seniors”. It also publishes a section on significant changes to the return, with the year’s new tax benefits. Looking at those before filling out the return is what keeps you from leaving money on the table.

  4. Step 4: File electronically

Hacienda states that filing the 2025 individual return is done electronically, and maintains separate sections with instructions for the 2025 return and for 2019 through 2024. You can use a program or application certified by the Department, or SURI. The Department notes that filing electronically lets it process the return more quickly and with more certainty, making any refund move faster.

  5. Step 5: If you will not make it, request the extension before the date

The automatic extension gives you six additional months to file, but only if you request it on or before your deadline, and with a warning Hacienda repeats: it does not extend payment. If you owe tax, it must be paid together with the extension request to avoid interest, surcharges and penalties.

  6. Step 6: If you missed it, there is a section for that

Hacienda publishes a section titled “What to do when you forget to file the return?” within its filing information. Do not assume there is no way out: the agency documents that case, and what makes the situation worse is letting more time pass without acting.

Where to do it

Electronically, using a program or application certified by the Department of the Treasury, or through SURI. Hacienda publishes the instructions, the Instructions Booklet, the Checklist and the Tax Calculations in its individual Income Tax section, with separate pages for the 2025 return and for 2019 through 2024.

What to do if something goes wrong

If you filed and then noticed an error, the route is the amended return, and through SURI it is free of charge even if you used a certified provider for the original. If all you need is to change your address, that requires no amendment: it is done with Form SC 2898. If you are expecting a refund that has not arrived, Hacienda has an online status lookup and an automated system at 787.721.2020, option 2. If you received a Notice and Demand for Payment for a deficiency, a 30-day clock from the mailing date runs for requesting reconsideration and a hearing in writing. And if you made a mistake completing it, Hacienda publishes sections on return error notices and suggestions for avoiding the most common errors. For your specific case — which deductions apply to you, how to treat a particular income, whether you must file — consult a CPA or a return specialist registered with Hacienda. Common mistakes

  • Assuming your deadline is April 15 without checking, when partnerships and grantor trusts go to March 15 and fiscal-year filers have their own date.
  • Requesting the extension believing it also extends payment, when Hacienda expressly warns it does not.
  • Completing the return without looking at the Instructions Booklet or the Checklist Hacienda publishes for that tax year.
  • Not reviewing the significant changes and new tax benefits section, and failing to claim something you were entitled to.
  • Being 65 or older and not looking at the Planilla Seniors, which Hacienda publishes separately.
  • Letting time pass after forgetting to file, instead of using the section Hacienda publishes for that case.

Frequently asked questions

When is the deadline?

For individuals, estates and trusts determining income on a calendar-year basis, April 15; on a fiscal-year basis, the fifteenth day of the fourth month following year-end. Other filers have different dates: partnerships, special partnerships, corporations of individuals and grantor trusts go to March 15, and the non-resident foreign individual to June 15.

Do I have to file online?

Hacienda states that filing the 2025 individual return is done electronically, and maintains a separate section with instructions for returns from 2019 through 2024. You can use a program or application certified by the Department, or SURI.

How much does filing cost?

It depends on the route. Hacienda notes, when discussing amended returns, that electronic filing carries a cost set by the certified software provider, and that SURI is free of charge. If cost matters to you, that comparison is worth making before choosing how to file.

I forgot to file last year. What do I do?

Hacienda publishes a section titled “What to do when you forget to file the return?” within its filing information. Consult it and act soon: letting more time pass does not improve matters, and Hacienda may determine deficiencies within four years after a return is filed.
