In short
If you are moving and want to close your electricity account, the procedure is called service disconnection and it is the simplest on LUMA’s entire list: the only requirement the company publishes is valid government-issued photo identification. You can request it through Mi LUMA Web, by calling 1-844-888-5862, or in person at a Customer Service Center. Do not leave it for later: while the account stays in your name, that property’s consumption keeps being billed to you.
What is it?
Service disconnection is the closing of your electricity account at a property. It is the opposite of a transfer: in a transfer the account passes to another person and service continues; in a disconnection you step out of the picture. They are two separate procedures even when they happen in the same move, and each is done by the person it applies to. Whoever arrives requests the transfer into their name; whoever leaves requests disconnection of theirs. The person moving into the property does not need you to disconnect first in order to put the account in their name, but disconnecting closes your cycle and stops your responsibility for that account.
Who can do it?
It applies to anyone with an active electric service account in their name who wants to close it. LUMA publishes no additional requirements of ownership, contract or permits for this procedure: the published list for disconnection has a single item, photo identification. That is what sets it apart from new service and from a transfer, both of which do ask for evidence of your right to the property.

Step by step
Step 1: Decide the date before you call
Disconnection cuts service at that property, so the date matters: request it for when you will no longer be using the power, not for the day you are still moving boxes. If the property is going to be occupied by someone else, what applies to them is a transfer into their name, and that is the route that keeps the house from losing service.
Step 2: Pick the route: Mi LUMA Web, phone or in person
LUMA publishes all three for this procedure. Mi LUMA Web is the most convenient if you already have your account set up. By phone it is 1-844-888-5862. In person, Customer Service Centers run on an appointment system, so it is worth booking one rather than joining the line.
Step 3: Have your ID ready and confirm the exact address
Photo ID is the requirement. Also confirm the service address exactly as it appears on the bill: in properties with several units, apartments or annexes, it is easy for the wrong account to be disconnected if the address is given approximately.
Step 4: Keep the confirmation and watch for the final bill
Note the date you requested disconnection and keep any reference or confirmation number they give you. That is what serves you if consumption after that date later shows up on a bill. If you disagree with what you are billed at closing, a bill query is a separate LUMA procedure and has its own guide.
Where to do it

How long it takes
What to do if something goes wrong
If you keep being billed after the date you requested disconnection, the route is a bill query, requested through Mi LUMA Web, by phone or in person. If what you want is for the account to pass to another person rather than for service to be cut, that is a transfer and the person staying requests it, not you. If you are leaving a rented property and the owner wants to keep service active, a transfer into the owner’s name also avoids the cut. LUMA publishes neither a cost nor a timeframe for disconnection on this page, so ask when you request it if you need to plan around an exact date. PRFácil does not manage LUMA accounts or file requests.
Common mistakes
- Moving out and not cancelling, leaving the account in your name billing the consumption of whoever arrived after.
- Requesting disconnection when what was needed was a transfer, and leaving the property without service.
- Giving an approximate address in a multi-unit building and disconnecting the wrong account.
- Not keeping the request’s reference number.
- Assuming disconnection requires property papers: for this procedure LUMA publishes only photo ID.
Frequently asked questions
What do I need to cancel?
Valid government-issued photo identification. It is the only requirement LUMA publishes for service disconnection, in contrast with new service and a transfer, which ask for considerably more.
Do I have to disconnect so the next tenant can put the account in their name?
Based on what LUMA publishes, the transfer is requested by the person arriving and does not depend on you disconnecting first. Even so, it is worth requesting your disconnection to close out your cycle and stop being responsible for that account.
Can I do it online?
Yes. LUMA lists Mi LUMA Web as one of the three ways to request disconnection, along with the phone and Customer Service Centers.
